Howard travles to Morgan State after dominating home opener of STN's MEAC College Game of Week

After hosting their first home game of the season, the Howard Bison travel to Morgan State for a MEAC battle on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Both teams are coming off victories on Saturday, with the Bison rolling over Delaware State 55-13 and the Bears taking down Savannah State 18-11. Caylin Newton led a Howard offense that put up 529 yards of total offense in the win, throwing for 313 yards and five touchdowns and adding a team-high 58 yards on the ground. Corey Holmes fell on the ball in the end zone to give Morgan State a lead they wouldn’t give back with 5:21 left in the 3rd quarter.

With the win, Howard improved to 2-3 on the year and 2-1 in the MEAC. Newton continues to impress in his sophomore season, throwing for 1,593 yards and 15 scores. The team’s leading rusher, Newton has added over 300 yards on the ground as well. Mike London’s squad uses a stable of backs, issuing at least 16 carries to five different running backs. Khalid Dorsey leads the quintet with 169 yards and a score. Wielding arguably the top pair of pass catchers in the MEAC, Jequez Ezzard and Kyle Anthony, the passing offense has clicked under Newton. The big play threat, Ezzard has 28 catches for 737 yards and eight touchdowns, including three on Saturday. Anthony has 31 catches for 398 yards and four scores.

Not quite as big a threat as the Bison offensively, the Bears average just 16 points per game. Quarterback DeAndre Harris has completed just over 50 percent of his throws for 743 yards and four scores. Similar to Newton, the MSU quarterback is also the leading rusher for his team with 260 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Joshua Chase, William King and Jordan Riggins have all had at least 42 carries and 129 yards this season. Getting steadier playing time, Corey Holmes leads the receiving group with 13 catches and 166 yards.

Even with a much better defensive performance on Saturday, the Bison are still giving up 36 points per game. Marcellos Allen leads the bunch with 30 tackles this season. Up front, Zamon Robinson has picked up six tackles for loss and four sacks this season. The Bison defense has forced eight turnovers this season with Tye Freeland, Devin Hurtado and Jalen Smith having all picked off passes.

Damare’ Whitaker continues to thrive defensively, racking up 52 tackles so far this year with three tackles for loss and a fumble recovery. Ian McBorrough and Rico Kennedy round out a fantastic linebacking unit. McBorrough has 39 tackles this season with five tackles for loss and four sacks. Always a threat in the backfield, Kennedy has 34 tackles, six for loss and 2.5 sacks. With 15 turnovers forced, Ernest T. Jones defense has been opportunistic. Donte Small leads the turnover charge with four picks.

Last season at Greene Stadium, Howard picked up a 39-14 victory over the Bears. Morgan State won the last matchup in Baltimore 28-24. Morgan State leads the all-time series 43-27-1, winning ten of the last 13.
