Howard University (1-3) hosts Delaware State (0-5) on STN’s College Game of the Week this Saturday afternoon.
Howard, while a deceiving 1-3 due to their early season schedule, dropped Saturday’s contest 40-35 to North Carolina Central. The Bison took a 35-34 lead with 6:19 left on a Khalid Dorsey touchdown run, before allowing a NCCU score with 24 seconds left to steal a victory. Delaware State couldn’t slow down Lamar Raynard and the NC A&T offense en route to a 34-6 loss, their fifth straight defeat to start the year.
Mike London’s offense has been strong this season with the Bison averaging over 30 points per game. The yardage numbers have been even better, with the Bison putting up 509.8 yards per contest. Caylin Newton, brother of Cam, is obviously a huge part of that. Newton is averaging 320 yards per game through the air, throwing ten touchdowns and six interceptions. Newton has added another 63 yards per game on the ground and a score, accounting for over 380 yards per game by himself. Khalid Dorsey, leads the running back trio with 137 yards and a touchdown. One of the best WR duos at this level, Jequez Ezzard and Kyle Anthony have flourished with Newton. Ezzard leads with 546 yards and five touchdowns while Anthony leads with 28 receptions and has added three touchdowns.
The Hornet offense hasn’t been good so far this year, averaging just 11.6 points per game. The offense is accumulating just under 260 yards per game. Keenan Black, a dual threat QB, has thrown for just 432 yards this season, while adding 138 yards and a score on the ground. Mike Waters has been the main back with 83 carries and 338 yards this season. Trey Gross leads the team with 18 receptions and 264 yards while catching both passing touchdowns.
The Bison defense has struggled, allowing nearly 42 points per game. With two FBS teams on the schedule, those numbers are slightly skewed, but NCCU was able to do much of the same against the Howard defense. Howard is allowing nearly 470 yards of total offense per game. Howard has forced seven turnovers on the defensive side of the ball this year. Zamon Robinson leads the group up front with four tackles for loss and three sacks. Tye Freeland has an interception and five PBU’s while Marcellos Allen leads the team with 25 tackles.
Somehow, the Hornet defense has been even less effective, allowing nearly 50 points per game and over 400 yards. Not able to cause pressure or force turnovers, the defense has been stuck on the field and gashed when on it. As a unit, The Hornets have registered just a single sack and forced a single turnover. Cavicante has been strong, registering 50 tackles and an impressive ten tackles for loss. On a bright note, the Hornets have blocked three kicks this season.
7-4 a year ago, Howard routed the Hornets in last year’s matchup 52-23. Newton racked up 366 total yards in the win with both Anthony and Ezzard going for over 100 yards. Gross had a big game in the loss, totaling 154 yards and two touchdowns through the air. The Bison have won the last two meetings between the teams.
